What is skip tracing?
Skip tracing is the process of locating a person's current address, phone number, or other contact information when the details you have are outdated or incomplete. The name comes from "skipping town": the person being located is the "skip," and the records they leave behind — address history, phone numbers, email addresses — are the trail.
A skip trace starts with what you already know about a person (a name and an old address, a phone number that no longer answers, an email that bounces) and cross-references it against large consumer databases to find what changed. The output is a set of candidate matches, each with a confidence signal, that a human then verifies.
Who uses skip tracing?
Skip tracing is an everyday tool in businesses that are legally entitled to reach a specific person and have lost touch with them:
- Collections and receivables teams locating a debtor's current phone or address to make contact they are entitled to make.
- Legal and process-serving professionals finding a current address to deliver court documents.
- Real estate investors and wholesalers identifying and reaching property owners who don't live at the property.
- Insurance operations teams reconnecting with policyholders, beneficiaries, or claimants whose contact details went stale.
- Asset recovery and repossession agents locating collateral through its registered owner's address history.
- Genealogists and heir-search firms tracing living relatives for estates.
What these have in common: the searcher already has a legitimate, specific reason to reach a known person. Skip tracing is a locating tool, not a surveillance tool.
How does skip tracing work?
Modern skip tracing is database matching. A typical trace works through progressively broader passes:
- Start from a strong identifier. A phone number or email is the strongest starting point because it is nearly unique to a person. A name plus a state, ZIP code, or date of birth also works.
- Match against consumer records. The identifiers are searched against databases compiled from consumer marketing files and other lawfully sourced records — hundreds of millions of people, each with address history, phone numbers, emails, and name variants.
- Widen carefully when the exact search misses. Good systems relax one criterion at a time — checking maiden and former names, common nicknames, transposed name order, compound-surname spellings, or nearby metro areas — and label every result with exactly how it matched.
- Score and verify. Each candidate gets a confidence signal based on how many independent details agree. A human confirms the result before acting on it; a database match is a lead, not proof.
The quality difference between skip-tracing tools is mostly in step 3 and 4: whether the system tells you *how* each result matched (exact contact match vs. a relaxed date-of-birth match, for example) and whether its confidence signal is honest.
What data does a skip trace search?
Consumer-record databases typically hold, per person: current and historical addresses (often a decade or more of history), landline and mobile phone numbers, email addresses, name variants (maiden names, nicknames, alternate spellings), approximate age or date of birth, and deceased flags. Is skip tracing legal?
Yes, when it is done with lawfully sourced data for a legitimate purpose. Two boundaries matter:
- Purpose rules. Data that is regulated for specific uses stays regulated no matter who queries it. For example, using consumer data to decide whether someone gets credit, housing, insurance, or a job is governed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act and requires a consumer reporting agency — skip-tracing tools like CoverFi are informational services and prohibit those uses.
